Denisil Stonecutter
[Awoken Anubis]

A truly, deeply unfortunate elnin. Misfortune nips at Denisil's heels like a hungry wolf chasing after a deer, dogging his steps at every turn. His personality has become hard, and his disposition rather gloomy- but beneath it all lies a heart of gold.

Denisil was born and raised in the easternmost mountains of Zevija, in a little mining town called Goldwarren. His mother passed away in a mining accident when he was still quite young, and as a result, he was raised mostly communally by the other miners. All the adults in town had a hand in keeping an eye on him, though they often passed the job off to Ruby, the only other kittom in town at the time. Although she seemed to appear and disappear from town at random, Denisil loved her like an older sister, and he followed her like a lost puppy.

Then Ruby vanished. She disappeared from town as she often did, and then just... never came back. Denisil, still a kittom at the time, felt her loss almost as deeply as his mother's, and the apparent betrayal left him bitter and guarded against new friendships- something he already wasn't that good at.

Of course, when Denisil grew into an adult, he took up the pickaxe and became a miner. It wasn't as if there was anything else to do, and despite their payment being made in scrip, the working elnins of Goldwarren did not live badly. It was a stupid thing to be proud of, but no one could haul rock like Denisil. The mine was prosperous, the gold was flowing, and the mine's owners were happy.

Until it wasn't, and they weren't.

After many reliable years, the Goldwarren mines ran dry- and the pressure from the mine's owners was enough to turn a hunk of coal to diamond. If the gold wouldn't flow, then neither would their payment. As the money began to slow to a trickle, the hungry elnins of Goldwarren began to get desperate. The layout of the mine began to expand, new mineshafts disappearing into the dark this way and that as their hunt for gold grew ever more frenzied.

Then... it happened. The "Goldwarren Incident" that this part of Zevija would someday be famous for. Their haphazard search inside the far eastern mountains connected the mine to a system of caves within Vahl D'Sari's westernmost range, and released a shrieking Daeva upon the hapless miners. By the time the Hunter's Guild arrived to drive back the beast and seal the passageway, everyone had been killed. Everyone, that is, except for Denisil. Trapped under rubble as he was, he escaped the monster's attention... but his time in the miasma-choked tunnel has certainly left its mark.

He doesn't know how long he was down there, in the dark. He never even saw the monster, only heard the sounds echoing from ahead, past the cave-in. He remembers holding his breath, his heart pounding, his limbs trapped beneath a ton of heavy black rock, completely helpless. The next thing he can remember is being pulled from the rubble by a hunter and being sent to receive treatment in the capital. He didn't speak a word of the experience to anyone, and as soon as he was well enough to travel, he left the region entirely.

These days, he's been living in Silveil and staying just outside of Silveil City at a strange little shack called the "Curiosity Shoppe." He helps out around the place, patching holes in the roof and being intimidating when the job requires it. He's suspicious and distrustful of visitors, and his outward appearance alone is enough to scare away more fainthearted elnins, leading Adavir to sometimes shoo him to the back if he's particularly grouchy to avoid "scaring the customers."

Although he puts up a tough front, Denisil is deeply claustrophobic, and especially despises being underground or inside tunnels. He has frequent nightmares of Daeva- despite his attempts at bravado, seeing any evidence of a Daeva's passage would easily send him into a panic attack.

Adavir

Denisil's relationship with this elnin is... strange. They met when he mistook the orange elnin's "shop" for a dilapidated cowshed by the side of the road, and he broke in with the intention of waiting out a rainstorm. Of course, when it turned out the ugly little building was actually some kind of store (a generous term for it, really) that had an owner who very much still planned to use it, Denisil had to stay and make repairs to the door he'd broken. Somehow, this led to... whatever is going on between them now. It's not much, but Denisil thinks of his place at Adavir's side as home.

Sulahn

It shouldn't have lasted, but for some reason, Denisil is still in touch with one of the doctors who treated him after the Goldwarren Incident. To an outside observer, the two of them might even appear to be friends. Of course, Denisil holds no illusions of such a thing, but he inexplicably hangs around the blue elnin regardless. Sulahn keeps an eye on him and provides ongoing treatment for the severe case of miasma poisoning he presents, and if Denisil enjoys his company, that's not anyone else's business.

Ruby

He hasn't seen her in years, but Denisil recalls his time with his "sister" with a myriad of mixed feelings. He looked up to her, trusted her, and then... she vanished, leaving him alone. He's accepted that it probably wasn't her fault. More likely that something terrible happened. Who even knew if she was still alive? As much as this thought sits heavy as a stone upon his heart, he has to believe it. If he were to find out that she had chosen to leave him behind without so much as a word, let alone the fact that she'd never been one of the townsfolk at all, he might not ever recover from it.
