Silveils libraries were strange things, woven into the trees themselves, their shelves curling out of bark and their lanterns glowing softly with foxfire moss, and the odd mushroom shimmering faintly, growing right out of the shelves.
Himmel had never been here before and he trailed quietly at Mitternacht’s side, paws silent on the mossy floor. The air smelled faintly of paper, but fresh and lively.

The older elnin walked with purpose, heading straight for a section marked by silver-dyed ribbons. “Herbal records,” Mitternacht explained, glancing back with a faint smile. “If we’re going to explore Silveil properly, best to know what’s out there first.”

Himmel nodded, eyes wide as he craned his neck to look at all the thick books stacked above each other. He’d half expected the library to feel cold or dusty, but instead it felt alive - whispers of voices echoing faintly through the shelves, as if the books themselves wanted to be read, waiting in anticipation for the next elnin to pick them up.

Mitternacht stopped in front of a low shelf, tugged out a scroll and unfurled it. Elegant sketches of plants bloomed across the parchment, glowing faintly in the dim light. Himmel padded closer, peering over. One in particular caught his attention: a fern drawn in graceful strokes, its fronds outlined in silver ink.

“What’s that one?” Himmel asked softly, tapping the page with his paw.

“Moonlace Fern.” Mitternacht’s voice carried the patience of a teacher. “Common in shaded glades near still water. See the mist drawn here?” He pointed with a claw. “The fronds give off a cooling vapor. Healers use it to soothe fever and burns. Even tired paws.” His tone held just the smallest hint of amusement at the kittoms perked ears. “They can grow quite tall as well, easy enough for kittoms to hide under them. They usually grow in big groups, often covering the whole ground in one area, and it almost looks like you’re underwater. One day I’ll show you.”

Himmel blinked, studying the glowing sketch with fascination. “It looks like starlight caught in a net.”

Mitternacht hummed agreement. “A fitting description. When you see it in the wild, the mist catches moonlight. Looks almost like lace drifting on the air.”

The kittom tilted his head, thoughtful. “Have you used it before?”

“Once or twice,” Mitternacht said. His eyes softened, remembering. “Travelers can walk for days without pause in Silveil. I’ve seen paws worn bloody from the journey. A poultice of Moonlace does wonders.”

Himmels tail curled neatly around his paws. He fell quiet for a moment, tracing the ferns shape on the page with his gaze. Then, shyly, he asked, “Could we… go find some? Not for us, but… maybe for someone who needs it.”

Mitternacht gave a small, approving nod. “We could. Though it grows deeper in the woods. A walk worth taking.”

The kittoms ears flicked, uncertain but curious. “Would it be dangerous?”

“Not dangerous,” Mitternacht said firmly. “But Silveil always tests the unwary. That’s why we learn first.” He rolled the scroll back up, slipped it onto the shelf, and rose smoothly to his paws. “Come. We’ll check the gardens outside. They sometimes grow smaller ferns for study.”

Sure enough, when they stepped back into the starlit air, the librarys garden spread before them - rows of glowing herbs, mosses, and flowering vines cultivated neatly under the endless night sky. And in the far corner, framed by a crescent-shaped pool, Himmel saw it.

The Moonlace Fern swayed gently in the moonlight, every frond outlined in silver mist. He approached carefully, ears forward in awe. The plant shimmered in soft blue and purple hues, with the ends becoming brighter and more glowing. The stems were delicate but firm, with a spiral pattern, and they swayed with every breeze. A very faint smell of something sweet and earthy surrounded the fern and tingled in his nose.

“It’s even prettier than the drawing,” he whispered.

Mitternacht stood beside him, eyes glinting softly. “Remember it well, Himmel. Knowledge is as important as discovery. Sometimes what you find in books saves you before you ever step into the wild.”

The kittom nodded slowly, gaze still fixed on the shimmering fern. He didn’t quite know yet if he wanted to be an explorer, a healer, or both…but in that moment, with the mist curling around his paws like cool lace, he thought Silveil might teach him in its own quiet way.
