“Remind me… why exactly are we here right now?”
They had all the glass jewelry packed up and shipped back to Strynhalde, so Shiva was planning on heading home herself, and yet…
Instead, the two djinnin were now at the hot springs in Zevija, overlooking the volcanic geysers that could potentially erupt at any moment. She supposed with them being dormant at the moment, they did look somewhat breathtaking with an iridescent sheen, seemingly mimicking glass, but the smell of sulfur lingering in the air completely ruined any sort of reverence she may have had.
“Well, you told me to go take a bath, right?”
The abject look of horror and disgust she had on her face made Ifrit burst into laughter, holding up his hands to indicate it was just a joke.
“Kidding, kidding!”
He had already washed up after leaving the forge (Shiva made sure of it/wouldn’t let him accompany her until he did), so there was another reason why they were here.
“You were wondering where the artisan drew inspiration from, right? This is one of the places. I hear he even uses the water from here for refining the glass for some of his pieces.”
Before Shiva could say anything, Ifrit had already dipped under some of the boundary ropes set up (mostly to keep away tourists thinking these were lavish hot springs for soaking), and made his way to the nearest geyser. She hissed at him, demanding to know what he was doing, but he merely knelt down, filling two containers with some of the water within.
After it was filled, he made his way back, smiling cheerfully at a clearly irate djinnin.
“Hey, he asked me to get some more water for him, and it couldn’t hurt to keep some ourselves, right?”
He waved the smaller container as Shiva narrowed her eyes.
“Gotta make a trip back to the forge first, but I promise we’ll start heading to Strynhalde right after!”
True to his word, he only returned to drop off the container of water, and soon the two were well on their way back to Strynhalde. While Shiva had been miffed about Ifrit’s antics, her mood visibly improved once they were closer to the region she called home.
Beautiful white landscape and pristine, clean snow, Shiva took a deep breath, relishing in the cold air that filled her lungs and spread throughout her body. While Ifrit didn’t openly show disdain for the cold, she knew he wasn’t fond of it, rubbing his arms to ward off the cold. Well, she supposed she didn’t have to worry about him catching a cold, since he was a djinnin and all, but after making her deal with Zevija, she wanted to have a little bit of revenge.
“Well, since you so graciously showed me such a stunning feature of Zevija, it’s only right I return the favour.”
Ifrit arched an eyebrow, but followed her wordlessly as the two traversed Strynhalde’s terrain. While part of him still wished she would one day just move to Zevija, considering she often had to go there for her passion projects, he couldn’t deny that Strynhalde was her home, and while she wasn’t often one to wear her emotions on her sleeve, he could tell how happy she was whenever Strynhalde came up. Or perhaps it was due to all the time they spent together that he was able to tell, taking note that even now she was humming softly as they made their way to some unknown location. He knew she would only get mad and vehemently deny it if he pointed it out, but he found the contrast endearing, and one of the reasons why he didn’t mind her constant icy demeanour.
After a short trek, the two arrived at what appeared to be a frozen lake. Perhaps lake wasn’t quite the right term, but it was a sizable expanse of frozen water. It almost looked like an outdoor rink of some sort, with banks of snow forming white walls around the area. The flurries of snow kicked up by the wind skimmed across the ice, seeming to make it shimmer and sparkle as the snowflakes danced about.
“While the dormant geysers of Zevija are nice, nothing beats the sheer beauty of Strynhalde’s landscape. The beautiful sheen of this frozen expanse, mirroring the purest of glass. Would this not be the very definition of perfection? Wait here.”
Before Ifrit could respond, Shiva had left, leaving him to stand by. He wasn’t sure how long he had spent waiting, as at some point his attention had drifted off into the distance, but at some point Shiva had returned. He noticed she was now at the edge of the ice, a heavy cloak draped across her shoulders, her hair tied up and adorned with a gem accessory. As he made his way toward her, she dropped her cloak, and he noticed she had changed.
Donning an outfit clad in sequins, Shiva took a few steps onto the ice, her skates gliding gracefully across the surface. She had missed this, the rush of frosted air whipping through her hair as she glided forward, the cold caressing her face as she twirled and lept. The ice below reflecting her grace and poise, a mirror of her love and passion.
While her intent was to show Ifrit the beauty of Strynhalde’s frozen expanse, the fiery djinnin only had eyes for her. Many often regarded her as the prima donna of the ice, but to him, she was the very epitome of Winter’s Grace.
