Having completed what she needed to do in Ahza, the two made their way back to Zevija. Even with Ifrit insisting he could carry everything, the fact that they had a bag of gemstones, 3 bags of sand, and another bag of jewelry accessories, it was clearly more than one nin could carry.

After enlisting the services of a porter nin, Shiva decided to swing by the market once more, perusing the wares for various samples of glass. While she fully intended to have hers crafted from the sand they had gathered, she still needed good references for the forge so that they could craft it exactly to her standards. She had tried in the past (without avail) to describe exactly how she wanted each piece to be, down to the intricate details of each facet and curve as well the placement of various colours and patterns, only to have both parties end up stressed and frustrated over the results.

She had also tried supervising the artisans in the past, but the former could not stand the sweltering heat, smell, dust and debris, while the latter did not appreciate having someone they deemed inexperienced hovering over them like a hawk.

This time, however, should hopefully be different. Since small, Ifrit had shown interests in blacksmithing and working the forge and managed to apprentice under a seasoned veteran, and while his expertise was generally in crafting armor for the hunter’s guild, he at least knew his way around a furnace and was familiar with the intricacies. At the very least, he would be more welcome company in supervising her works, and she knew she could trust him to make sure no shortcuts were taken when it came to crafting her items.

After obtaining the various glass pieces she needed, she began inspecting them, making various marks to indicate specific cuts and colour placement. It was something Ifrit had suggested once, saying that having visual samples would be a lot more helpful than her trying to explain what she wanted, and would help keep both of them on the same page in terms of expectations. It was certainly more work, but she had noticed she generally got far better and more accurate results doing so, especially since she was so particular about how she wanted things. Speaking of Ifrit though…

Shiva had thought he seemed oddly quiet, and turned to see he was nowhere in sight. Perplexed, she turned to the porter nin, who then informed her that he wished to make some purchases himself and told her to go to the forge first and he’d meet her there. She found it odd that he had not informed her himself, and was perhaps a little miffed, but he at least made sure to leave their materials with them while he wandered off.

Not wanting to dwell on it any further, they made their way to the forge, where she dropped off the sand samples, and began going over the various pieces she wanted crafted. Mid-way through her explanation, she heard the sound of someone running, and turned to see Ifrit racing up to them.

“Wait!”

Slightly out of breath, he caught up to them, and dropped the satchel he was carrying.

“You’ll need some other minerals for crafting coloured glass. I got some of them when we were looking for gemstones, but I had to track down some of the other ones we were missing”

Shiva opened her mouth to protest, but didn’t want to admit it was something she hadn’t initially thought of, and so she closed it, opting to give Ifrit a look instead. However, he seemed to understand what she was going to say, and merely grinned.

“I also had to pick up some other material for uh, another project, so that’s on me, sorry!”

While part of her was curious, it wasn’t something she was going to pry into. If Ifrit wanted to dabble in his own passion projects while he was here, she wouldn’t stop him, as long as he made sure her own pieces were completed first.

“Very well. I have business elsewhere, but I expect everything to be fully completed by the time I’m back.”

Ifrit nodded, and Shiva turned, leaving Ifrit and the artisan to get to work.

Several days later, she returned to the forge, and was greeted with a beaming, soot-covered djinnin. She grimaced, and scooted away as he attempted to move forward to hug her.

“Absolutely not. Not until you’ve had a shower. Did you finish my pieces?”

“Yah! We pulled a few all-nighters, but everything should be finished, wrapped up and ready to go. You wanna see?”

Not waiting for an answer, or perhaps already knowing her response, he began heading towards the workshop, with her following. The items were indeed already neatly packaged, but Ifrit began unravelling one for Shiva to inspect.

The icy blue djinnin’s eyes widened slightly. It was indeed stunning. They were a pair of earrings, vibrant hues of cobalt and turquoise, and in the center was what looked like a white bird. A snow bird. However…

Shiva turned to Ifrit, giving him a questioning look, as he returned it with a sheepish grin.

“It’s not one of your commissioned pieces, but I asked the artisan for some help making this. I promise it was made using the extra material we had left over. It’s your birthday soon, right?”

She flustered, and turned her head, only to be pulled close with a peck on the cheek. Part of her was annoyed he was getting soot all over her, but she supposed, just this once, was fine.

“... Thank you. They’re beautiful.”
