Eyre’s vibrant blue skies swirl with pink and orange clouds as travelers approach the edge of Silveil. Passing the border feels almost as though one has captured a timelapse of a sunset in moments, the pink clouds deepening to violet and finally deep midnight blue dizzyingly fast. The twilight band almost creates a visual border between the day and night, when standing on a boat at the right distance it seems like an umbrella of night is opened just beyond the sunny sky.
The forest surrounding the lake seems peaceful and ever brimming with life that has adapted to the perpetual veil of night, but the lake and city set in the middle have more danger hiding than some might suspect. Tiny glowing jellyfish drift and dance in the gentle lapping of the water, giving a twinkling effect that, added to the reflections of the starry sky on the water’s surface with a new dimension in the depths, those unaccustomed to the view might find themselves confused whether they’re looking up or down. Several types of the jellyfish are actually poisonous, meaning kittoms should be taught not to go touching things until they learn the differences to watch for or have an adult chaperone. Jellyfish that wash ashore are often used for teachable moments to kittoms in the city by their caretakers – which colors, tentacle shapes, and so on to watch for, how to rescue a stranded creature and return it safely to the water. Sometimes edible things or valuable shells that can be used for decoration or tools are found, too, and kittoms will have small fights over who found it first.
In the forest surrounding the city there are glowing mushrooms and flowers, and even these can be toxic if not handled properly. Eaten raw, some mushrooms can cause a tummy ache but if soaked in water overnight before cooking they are perfectly safe to consume. Adults travel well known paths, keeping them marked and tidy, ensuring there are no poisonus or partially toxic flora within sight of the paths. These safety measures help with allowing kittoms a bit more independence, and the paths that travel through denser areas of toxic mushrooms or other hazards are always heavily gated off so kittoms cannot enter without an adult. Signs with warnings are placed near bad plants that cannot be moved or otherwise eliminated, and local shops keep preserved samples with painted carvings and detailed descriptions available for reference.
Silveil is also no slouch at teaching elnin young and old to keep their wits about them at all times. Tricksters and scams abound thanks to the local Thieves Guild, though most kittoms only lose their pocket money or snacks once or twice before becoming a bit more cautious, though perhaps some idolize the pranksters and begin trying to learn how to grift other kittoms…leading to other problems down the road. All in all, the learning possibilities are endless to newcomers of Silveil and the experience is extremely rewarding to any who spend time in the region.
