Aresia's Frozen Imagination
Aresia had always found it easier to express herself without words.
Words could become tangled. They could come out wrong, especially when she was angry or frustrated. Sometimes she didn't even know exactly what she was feeling until she had already done something with it.
Snow was different.
Ice was different.
They never asked her to explain herself.
They simply waited for her imagination to take over.
In Strynhalde, Aresia found the perfect place to let that imagination run wild.
The region was unlike anywhere else in Eyre. Snow covered the land, stretching across the tundra and gathering between the frozen forests. The trees stood with white trunks and blue-white leaves, some of which crystallized during the colder months. Even the landscape seemed to encourage her creativity.
Aresia wandered through the snowy landscape, her little paws sinking softly into the powder beneath her. Above the distant treeline, the enormous eldertree rose into the sky. Its blue-black trunk contrasted against its ice-white, fuzzy leaves, which caught snowfall until the boundary between leaf and snow became almost impossible to distinguish.
She stared at it for a long moment.
Then she smiled.
She had an idea.
Aresia gathered several pieces of loose ice and carried them toward a quiet area near the edge of a frozen forest. She arranged them in a circle before beginning her work.
Her first creation was small.
A delicate little creature with enormous ears, a curled tail, and a crown of jagged ice crystals.
Aresia tilted her head.
It wasn't quite right.
She added another shard to its back.
Then another.
Soon, the tiny creature had enormous crystalline wings.
Aresia's eyes sparkled.
Now that was better.
She continued.
One creation became three.
Three became seven.
Soon, the snow around her was filled with strange sculptures. There were twisting towers, strange animals, flowers with razor-thin petals, spiraling horns, crystalline trees, and creatures that seemed to exist somewhere between animals and dreams.
None of them looked exactly alike.
That was important to Aresia.
She didn't want to make ordinary things.
She wanted to make things that existed only inside her imagination.
Some sculptures were beautiful.
Others were bizarre.
Some looked almost delicate enough to shatter from a breath.
Aresia loved every single one.
For a while.
Then she noticed one of her sculptures leaning slightly to one side.
She frowned.
She pushed it upright.
It fell again.
Aresia tried to fix it.
Again.
It fell.
Her ears flattened.
She stared at the crooked sculpture.
A little frustration began bubbling inside her.
She tried one final adjustment.
CRACK.
The entire sculpture collapsed beneath her paw.
Aresia froze.
She looked down at the broken pieces.
Then she laughed.
The frustration disappeared almost instantly.
She gathered the shards and began building something completely different.
This time, she created a tall, twisting figure with long crystalline claws and a crown that resembled frozen flames.
It was strange.
Sharp.
A little intimidating.
And absolutely perfect.
Aresia stepped back proudly.
This was what she liked most about creating.
There were no rules inside her imagination.
She could turn anger into something sharp.
She could turn frustration into something strange.
She could turn happiness into something delicate.
And when something didn't feel right, she could simply destroy it and begin again.
Her creations didn't have to survive forever.
Perhaps that was part of why she loved them.
Sometimes Aresia deliberately destroyed her own work.
She would spend hours making an elaborate sculpture, only to suddenly decide that she hated it. Instead of forcing herself to keep something she didn't like, she would smash it into countless glittering fragments.
Sometimes she was angry when she did it.
Sometimes frustrated.
Sometimes she simply had a better idea.
The destruction itself became part of her creative process.
A broken sculpture wasn't a failure.
It was material for the next idea.
By late afternoon, Aresia had transformed the snowy clearing into a peculiar frozen gallery.
Ice shards glittered everywhere.
Some creations stood proudly.
Others had already been destroyed, leaving piles of crystalline fragments scattered across the snow.
One particularly enormous sculpture stood in the center.
It had a sweeping body, enormous wings, curling horns, and dozens of thin ice shards extending from its back like frozen feathers.
Aresia stared at it.
She didn't know what it was supposed to be.
She didn't care.
It was hers.
The wind swept through the clearing, carrying tiny flakes of snow around her creation. The crystalline leaves of the nearby forest caught the light, making the entire landscape shimmer.
Aresia sat quietly.
For once, she didn't feel the need to make anything else.
She simply watched the snow settle.
She realized something.
Her creations didn't always need to make sense.
Neither did her feelings.
She didn't always need to explain why she was angry, frustrated, excited, or happy. Sometimes she could simply take those feelings and turn them into something she could see.
Something she could touch.
Something she could destroy.
Something she could rebuild.
That was how Aresia expressed herself.
Not with perfect words.
Not with perfect sculptures.
But through imagination.
Through ice.
Through destruction and creation.
Every shard told a different story.
And every time Aresia shattered something she didn't like, she was already imagining what she could create from the pieces.
She looked once more at her strange frozen masterpiece.
A mischievous little smile appeared on her face.
Then she reached for another shard of ice.
She had another idea.
