In Taffy's little hometown, there aren't really many farms to speak of- and that's an issue for anyone trying to make wild rice soup. She can get the wild rice, sure, and maybe a few cold-hardy veggies, but meat for the soup can be hard to find. Lucky for her, someone new has wandered into town, and he has a very plump-looking bird with him! Unfortunately, no matter how politely she asks, he just won't share- what a scrooge!
