Fog rolled over the mountains in Kyendi as Ouska meandered through some of the quieter forest paths. He wanted to move a bit more briskly but the thick tropical forest undergrowth made such travel hard. A slight feeling of urgency tugged at his heart though. Well, whether it was urgency or excitement was hard to tell. He had promised his beloved that they could watch the stars together tonight, but the sun was already setting and it looked a bit overcast. Kyendi tended to be quite misty but the place he was headed was up a mountain where if he could just get to their agreed spot the view would most likely come together just fine.
He tried to ignore the soreness in his paws but did take a brief break at a set of waterfalls that pooled into a small waterway. He crossed in the shallowest part and the cool feeling of the water and worn stones beneath his toe beans seemed to help. His journey continued, winding through paths and around a few ruins until he felt the ground start to incline a little more. Up a mountain trail he went knowing the peak wasn't far now. It was quite dark at this point and the forest was starting to give away a bit to a little more open area.
The sky wasn't the clearest but Ouska found himself gazing up in awe as beams of light rained down from the sky. His pace slowed a little bit before a familiar voice caught in his ears. "Your mouth's gaping open, Ouska. Are you disappointed? It doesn't look like we'll be enjoying the stars tonight." Cass commented, but her voice was warm and he could tell she was smiling as she spoke without even looking her way. His gaze slowly dropped from the sky to rest on her though. It was a scene he wished he had the means to capture but since he had just come back from a trip some of his belongings were still back in Bellmoril. It was difficult to take everything he owned with him after all.
He plodded over to sit beside Cass, feeling her head rest on his shoulder as they both stared across the horizon. Usually they watched stars here but tonight's scene would be just a bit different. In the distance they could see Kyendi's elder tree with its long draping foliage that resembled a weeping willow's. Fog hung in the distance along with clouds and the lights continued to rain down across the region below. It wasn't his first light storm as far as experiences went, but it was definitely one of the most beautiful ones he had witnessed so far.
"I'm not disappointed with the view. There are plenty of beautiful stars." He said, turning his gaze to look at Cass. She put a little more weight into the side that leaned against him, maybe a touch embarrassed by the sudden compliment. Cass was a strong elnin, independent and comfortable with her own travels most of the time. Ouska was the one elnin that made her stomach flutter a bit though. He was beautiful in his own right, but he complimented and treasured her so. These moments were precious to them, even if the times they were together felt sporadic.
At the mountain peak they stayed up the whole night watching the sky, eventually seeing the colorful lights that poured down ebbing away. At last the stars were revealed. This wasn't a bad view either. Although the night hadn't turned out quite as planned due to the storm, it was time well spent together. Ouska only had a few days in Kyendi but he would go back to where Cass was staying and they could look at star maps and talk more there. They descended the mountain together around the time the sun was coming up. With the daylight brightening the sky it was easier to make out the floating islands in the distance. Cass wasn't staying near Ilrian but it was a novelty to see this sort of view. Skyhaven in Ealei had its own charm but the way the water cascaded off the islands was something both Ouska and Cass liked about Kyendi. They met other places too but Kyendi was by far their favorite region to meet in, probably because of how central it could be to some of the other regions. At least those not completely surrounded by larger bodies of water.
"Maybe we should catch light storms together more often." He couldn't help but tease a bit. Ouska had been around long enough to know the storms didn't seem easy to predict. Some might say the two of them had lucked out that such a storm came on the night they planned to stay up together. Ouska felt a bit lucky too that things worked out the way they had. One look at Cass's smile as she trotted beside him seemed to reveal similar feelings. He hoped maybe a storm would catch them again some day, preferably a light storm but other weather he could live with too. Even a little bit of rain had never stopped the two of them from meeting. There was a bit of fun that came with not knowing what to expect, especially since they tended to exchange letters to try to decide when to meet and such exchanges could take quite a bit of time and coordination to reach them both. Maybe they would see a light storm the next time too. He sure hoped so, and perhaps one even in a different region.
