SILVEIL

It was that time of the year again. Following the light showers that had arrived, just like last year, fish had begun to glow in various colours across the lands. Like last year, the black and white kittom with a gradient of purple and blue with a starlit suffusion creeping across his fur had heard the call.
He waited in the window of the little apartment he shared with his brother, looking out the window anxiously for the light shower to stop. The stars were bright and shining, and it looked absolutely beautiful in the lights of the city as the light shower fell. The dark sky was like a wall in the world, and here in Silveil the stars were trying to break free. Some of were so skilled that they tore into the wall and broke free as a giant streak in the sky. The stars always made the blanket of night that covered the land worth it.
He remained there, staring out into the city. A break in the rain was all he needed. He had a little glass fishbowl ready beside him, the very same that had survived the trip last year. He was excited to help escort another fish, so very enthusiastic, perhaps even more than before. Having had performed the ceremony last year, he truly felt like it was becoming a real tradition and not simply a renewed event from the past that had been long forgotten. It wasn't simply a 'cool' thing to do. He no longer had concerns that he would drop the poor fish onto the ground and ruin the whole thing.
As the rain stopped, Caelum was ready. He grabbed his little satchel that he'd prepared for the trip and then carefully picked up the fishbowl. He made his way to the lake; a place he expected to find fish like last year. It wasn't too far from his home, and as he ran through the city crowds, he found himself at the shore.
This year he was determined to get his fish on his own. He wouldn't need Helix's skills with catching fish to carry him through. In his bag he'd brought some food and his plan was simple! He would put the food in the water and then wait for the fish to swim over before catching it in the fishbowl. What wasn't part of his plan was Helix already being there waiting for him, standing in the beautiful water of Starlake with a school of glowing fish just swimming around him.
Helix was just so attuned with the lake, something Caelum just wasn't. He wasn't jealous so much but amazed. It wasn't something he could do, and it didn't seem to even be something his brother noticed he was doing. The fish just liked him, but Caelum could understand that. He loved his brother, too.
"I knew you'd come right away," Helix said as he clocked his brother and then gracefully walked over to him.
The fish didn't even swim away. Okay, maybe Caelum was a little jealous. He wanted to be as cool as him!
"I bet you can catch one in ten minutes," Helix said playfully but in a tone that was meant to be encouraging since last year Caelum had given up after ten minutes. Helix tried so hard to protect his brother's feelings and Caelum didn't even see it.
The lake was calm, and the luminous aquatic life was shining brightly. Caelum held his fishbowl firmly as he walked over to the shore. He had a plan, he knew it would work, he wouldn't get dissuaded. Of course, as his feet hit the water, the fish that had been swimming by the shore spooked and swam back away from him.
He sighed but then straightened up. He wouldn't let this get to him. His plan would work! And after nine minutes, a fish was in his bowl. He grinned proudly and held it up for his brother to see.
"You caught a great fish, Caelum."
"I got it! This fish is going to be the best fish in the whole boundless!"
The two laughed, and they walked in tow. They weren't the only ones making the walk, a familiar sight as last year. They remembered the walk but the guides along the way were helpful, offering snacks and food as well as a place to rest. It wasn't far but it was a good hike. It was nice to see so many people coming back for the tradition again and the boys appreciated the elnin that were providing food, water and a place to relax along the way. They took the offer, enjoying some tasty buns and some iced tea as they admired the fish in the bowl. It glowed slowly, swimming around in circles.
Caelum dropped some food into the bowl for it.
"The fish needs to be ready for the long swim," the kittom said proudly, causing one of the older elnin to laugh in an amused way.
"You're so thoughtful, Caelum," Helix said as he thanked the adult elnin for their time and snacks with a bow.
The walk felt longer for the kittoms as they were already seeing adults coming back who had started after them but that was what happened when you had shorter legs. They were having fun and when they reached the shore Caelum begun to spin around excitedly.
He held the fishbowl up over the water and out in front of him as he addressed the glowing fish that seemed to stop swimming around to pay attention to Caelum.
"We can't escort you any further, but I know you'll help Mr. Spirit!"
Then he carefully lowered the bowl until it was submerged in the water so the fish could swim out when ready.
The little glow moved out of the bowl and Caelum waved, "Good luck!"
