Fleur nuzzled her fluffy cheeks into the egg she had found in the garden a few days back. It had been nestled deeply into a snowbank - Fleur thought that maybe it had fallen from a nearby tree. But it looked a little strange to be a bird’s egg, not to mention it wasn’t really the season for it. The egg was cold when she found it - she thought that perhaps she may have been too late for the little creature. She brought the egg inside the house with the permission of her elder sister, Anya.

She’d spent the last few days making a small nest for the egg in the corner of her room, somewhat close to the fireplace that kept her room warm on the cold winter nights. She’d gathered blankets from all over the house, piling them high with pillows along the sides to keep the blankets in place. She laid in the center, with the egg close to her.

Fleur had been sleeping in the little blanket nest for the past few days, and she was beginning to actually find the whole thing comfy. She felt excited to be watching over something, for once. Keeping something safe. Like a whole new level of responsibility.

She felt a distinct warmth emanating from the egg, pulsing ever so slightly. It felt like it might hatch soon, and Fleur was beginning to get excited, her gaze never wandering too far from the egg - she didn’t want to miss it hatching, of course!

“Is the lil’one doing ok now?” Anya asked, as she peered her head into the doorway, giving a concerned look to Fleur.

Fleur nodded, gently rubbing her cheeks along the egg as she did so.

“I think it’ll be hatching soon. I wonder what it is?” She questioned softly, petting the egg as she did so.

“Hopefully nothing scary,” Anya said, “if it is, we’ll have to find a place to release it back into the wild - can’t have scary beasts this close to town.”

Fleur frowned a bit, hiding her face behind the egg, her eyes following the lines of the intricate shell.

“I don’t think it will be. I don’t know. It feels…. Special. I feel like I’m connected to it.” Fleur said softly as she closed her eyes, feeling the warmth emanating from the egg. It was true, she did feel connected to it. Like it was somehow special. It needed her care, it needed her. Even if it did turn out to be some sort of beastie - she’d figure something out. Anya was always soft when it came to these sorts of things anyways.

Anya gave a small nod. “Well, I’ll grab some more food for ya, Fleur, but you really should be getting up and stretching those legs of yours - it’s not good for you to be laying around all day… anymore than you usually do, of course.” Anya said with a wink and she turned and left the room, presumably to go make some sort of meal.

Fleur had not been eating much lately, she’d been too engrossed in making sure the little egg was alright, and it was making her nervous to leave it for long periods of time. It didn’t help that Anya had never been a particularly good cook. Fleur, despite being the younger sibling, was already much better at making meals than her older sister.

As Fleur had never really been allowed to stray too far from home, she made due with her time in the house, usually crocheting or knitting, or cooking or baking. The first few things she’d made weren’t very good - a lopsided scarf, a blanket with two different colours (because she’d ran out of wool of the original colour, and had to switch to a new one right at the end, so the last few lines were a dark blue instead of purple like the rest of the blanket).

Anya still wore the scarf Fleur had made her, though. It was only recently Fleur had made a replacement scarf, this one much better than the previous, but she still noticed her sister would wear both.

The blanket Fleur was currently using as the base of the nest. While it wasn’t the prettiest, it was nice and warm, and kept heat well.

Fleur’s ears perked up. She could make something for the little eggy!

She leaned over, gently getting off the egg so she could quickly make her way to the other side of the room, grabbing her knitting supplies and some light green coloured and blue coloured wool. She tried her best to match the colours of the egg.

Fleur began making a little scarf for the creature. Hopefully they’d like it!
