Floria lifted her head to the breeze, taking in the fresh, floral scents of Faerindell that had become so familiar to her in the time she’d spent there. She remembered how foreign and unfamiliar it had felt when she first arrived here, scared and confused and with no memory of how she got there. But now… now it felt like home.

Despite the consistently temperate weather of the region though, the air had a crispness to it now, a characteristic that Floria was not familiar with. But she knew what it meant. It was an undeniable sign that winter had finally arrived in Eyre. Not that anyone could tell it was winter simply by taking in the scenery. In a place like Faerindell, with it’s rolling green hills, dazzling blue skies, and abundance of flowers, one might live here in its perpetual spring, completely aware that winter had passed you by. But Floria could feel it in the air, and she knew others could, too.

But again, it meant nothing in a place like Faerindell. Though Floria shuddered to think what winter in a place like Strynhalde might be like. No thank you! She was perfectly happy right here. Right here in warm, gorgeous Faerindell.

Floria loved this place. Every day the flowers seemed to grow more vibrant, the trees more lush, and there was never a shortage of food to savor or sights to see. One of her favorite things to do was go sprinting through the fields and watch the fallen petals stir around her in her wake as she ran. Although a nap under the shade of the towering faerie shrouds was a guilty pleasure, too, she had to admit. But today, as she padded through a grove of flowering trees, something caught her eye.

Nestled between the roots of a rather inconspicuous tree, barely visible between the overgrown roots and blooming undergrowth, was an egg. It wasn’t like any egg Flora had seen before… not that she’d really seen many eggs in her lifetime. But just looking at it’s swirly green shell, she could tell immediately that there was something special about it and didn’t hesitate to approach, although she did give it a few cautious sniffs before touching it.

“How strange,” she murmured, brushing her paws along the its smooth, shade-cooled surface. The swirling texture of the egg felt wholly unnatural on her pads and for a moment she thought that she might have been mistaken – that this wasn’t really an egg after all. But no. With that distinct shape… what else could it be?

“How did you end up here, little egg?”

Her heart fluttered suddenly with a mix of curiosity and concern. Who could have left such a thing here? And were they still nearby? Were they looking for it? Was it abandoned? Her mind was a flurry of questions but her eyes narrowed with determination. Whatever the case, she couldn’t leave it here. If it was lost, someone would surely come looking for it, in which case she’d happily hand it over to its rightful owner. But out here, all on its own? Who knew what could happen to it.

Without a second thought, she scooped the egg into her arms and scurried off in the direction of home, winding through the pink-leaved trees as she went. She didn’t know anything about caring for eggs, but you just needed to keep them warm, right? That was easy enough. And even though she didn’t know the first thing about raising whatever sort of creature might be growing inside, much less the egg itself, she was convinced that it needed her and she was going to do everything in her power to keep it safe and healthy.
