Kawehi looks out the window. They’re really high up, and so even from this distance he can make out far away mountains, their peaks smooth and rounded. He’s visiting the sunshard isles in Kyendi with his two brothers, Ka’aukai and Keone. As he watches, another floating island drifts in between him and the mountains, sunlight reflecting off the yellow crystals that support the island. If he got up and looked out the opposite side of the building he’d be staring out into the sea. 

But he doesn’t get up, instead he looks down at the egg he has nestled in a heap of blankets. The egg was unusual. Roughly pomu sized, it was green and wrapped in  what resembled leaves and string. Keone had brought the thing back to the inn they were staying in the other day, the grown elnin carrying it in a basket. Keone had been quiet on where exactly it had come from or what it was, Kawehi is not even sure if he really knew much about it all, but they’d all been taking turns looking over the thing.

Kawehi sighs and adjusts the blankets to more securely wrap around the egg. The miasma rolling in lately had been relatively thick, and he didn’t want it to affect… well whatever was in the egg. 

He sighs again and narrows his eyes at the egg. Staying inside was so boring, but he and Aukai had been left home again while Keone went out, the adult the only one of them strong enough to brave the current miasma levels.

He curls up next to the egg and closes his eyes. He’s really tempted to take a nap, there is nothing much else going on at the moment. 

“Hey, Kawehi!” He hears Ka’aukai call from the other side of the room. 

Kawehi perks up and lifts up his head off his front paws, careful not to jostle the egg. 

“Did you know you can see the eldertree from here?”

“Wait really?” 

“Yeah. Come look!”

Kawehi stands and stretches, calling his pomu, Captain from his shadow. He looks down at the tiny creature, all black fluff and a white mask, and it squeaks back at him. Kawehi grins at Captain, nudging them softly with one paw, and they chitter back at him good naturedly. Kawehi knows its a half hearted fuss, so he he just laughs a little. Captain tilts his head curiously, waiting to see what Kawehi wants.

“Hey, you mid watching the egg for a few moments? I gotta go talk with Aukai.”

The pomu bounces in place, nodding furiously before basically plastering themself to the egg, trying to wrap their arms around it.

“You guard it okay?”

Captain squeaks an affirmative, and then Kawehi is trotting over to his brother.

“Look, look!” Ka’aukai drops down out of the window allowing Kawehi to prop himself up on the sill. The large floating island that obscured the view from that particular window for the last few days had finally, slowly drifted out of the way, meaning out in the distance he was now able to make the form of the giant weeping willow that was Kyendi’s Eldertree.

“One day we gotta go see that up close!” Kawehi breathes out. It’s not nearly as big as yggdrasil back in ealei where they grew up, but man, it was still impressive.

Kawehi drops back down from the window, allowing Ka’aukai to take his place again. His brother grins at him.

“I know, right?”

Kawehi laughs, and then he’s turning back to the corner he’d been in for a while. Captain is still plastered to egg, and he grins, making his way back to his pomu and the egg he’s guarding.

Kawehi is so curious what is going to hatch from it, so he’ll do his best to keep it defended and safe until then.
