Falling leaves began to flutter inside my small abode through the open window to my left. I glanced at the rusty brown movement which caught my eye, tracing its path to the hardwood floor. On my right, a light fire crackled and popped merrily. My feet rested comfortably on a small stool as I rocked in the oversized wooden rocking chair, patiently purling the next row of the tiny scarf I was knitting. The knitting basket was full of yarn and the intended recipient of said scarf was cradled by my pomu: a fey touched egg. I, Willow, turned to face out the window and thought about my sojourn just two days earlier.
I had found the fey touched egg while on a stroll through the forest of Bellmoril where it was wedged at the base of a tree and a rock, upside down and about to fall. I always collected interesting things from the forest as inspiration for my knitting, but this was far more interesting. Naturally I would not have taken the egg if it seemed it was being cared for, but both its strange location and precarious angle lifted any potential guilt about removing it. If anything, I was glad to care for it until the parents came to find it, or until it hatched. Whichever came first.
Now, back in my home, I was enjoying the idea of knitting an elaborate nest for the egg. I had started with a knit bowl which I soaked in cornstarch slurry to help it keep its shape. The bowl was currently upside down on a stone a bit nearer the fire so it could dry. I had also knit a cozy sleeve that fit over the egg like a hat, and now I giggled at the mental image of the egg wearing all the clothing I was making. The scarf was only 5 stitches across, and I soon had enough length to wrap around the egg three times. I snipped the excess yarn and secured the knot to ensure it would not unravel, then folded it in half and tied it in a four-in-hand around the egg. I hadn't included any fringe at the edges, but the nice square corners seemed to fit better - nothing extra for the scarf to get caught on. Laughing again at myself for imagining the egg walking around and tripping on nonexistent scarf tassels, I reached for another skein of yarn and began knitting a copy of the egg. The bowl I made could comfortably hold three fey touched eggs, and I intended to make crochet siblings for the real egg to lean against in the nest. But I wouldn't be satisfied with any old pattern, instead I made bold recolors of the egg and threaded in the swirled pattern over the top of the stitches for extra texture.
I whiled away two days knitting, passionate about my project and even taking my pomu's advice to create "sticks" to lay in the basket, using some of the real leaf that fell in the window to decorate the "branches". At long last my work was done, and I had a cozy nest to keep my egg safe and warm. It was also nice to know that even if the parents came seeking their offspring, I would always have the knit replicas. The real leaf would not last the winter, the fire warmed room would dry the air until the leaves crumbled into powder. My pomu smiled as it swept up the remaining leaves from the floor while I closed the window and stoked the fire. I stretched a bit, my back aching from sitting in one place for two consecutive days, then went off to bed. My pomu toddled alongside me before bidding me goodnight and sinking into my shadow for its own rest. I looked forward to the weeks ahead - just how far along was the egg? Would it hatch soon, or take a long time? My dreams were filled with excitement as my mind played out many scenarios, from mundane to legendary.
