S-1: Seasonal Lightbringers

The lazy spring mornings at the cabin had begun to wear heavily on Cassie’s mind as she gazed longingly at her pomu lantern.  The blue lantern, draped in purple ribbons and hand painted by the young kittom’s own fair paw drifted wistfully to and fro in the breeze that whisked through the white trees of the forest indefatigably through the gray streaked boughs and over the auburn ferns.

The forest surrounding Spike's Cabin was especially calm, bordered with rows of ferns as white Bellmoril birch trees rose high in columns and off into the distance like rows of tall soldiers protecting the small clearing in which the adventuring elnin had made his home and allowed the two Kittoms to lodge at.

Meditatively through the birdsong, Cassie’s thoughts drifted back towards the days with her grandmother, the faenin Cassiopeia whom she was named for.  In her early life, her whimsical grandmother taught her to carefully trim the ribbons and the best paints to use, which Cassie had gone to great trouble to procure in her rural locale.

She mused as her pomu slumbered and glowed softly, wrapped in magenta crystal and carefully decorated with the finest sugar paper she could find.  Gentle bells chimed softly.  All was as she had been taught by her grandmother in doing her tiny friend justice as he went through his slumber, but that did not stop Cassie from missing him.

She stared with lidded eyes and breathed a deep sigh before slumping over the stump table and purring in abject irritation as her pomu’s absence dawned on her fully.

“Well you’re looking chipper today” Smirked Satsuki.  “Missing your lil pal are we? I have to admit it’s a little annoying thing but, yknow?” Satsuki fumbled over her words and placed a paw on the blue pastel kittom’s shoulder, rubbing it gently to get her attention.

“I do appear to be in something of a malaise, don’t I Suki dear” burbled Cassie. “I apologise with my unseemly demeanour, but the absence of my diminutive companion weighs greatly upon my temperament it would seem” she continued amiably.

Satsuki’s eyes flickered back and forth as the recalled her friend’s love of somewhat long and flowery words and she distracted herself momentarily by scanning the amber scenery of the local forest for a conversation piece before returning her attention to her deflated friend.

“Well, what would you guys usually do? I normally see him just passing you-“ Suki started before Cassie cut across her quickly.  “Teacups!” Interjected Cassie, causing Satsuki to roll her eyes.  She should have known.

“So you guys have tea? That’s neat and all, but you always have tea whether he’s there or not? We could always just have tea now and act like he’s here?” Satsuki questioned.  She knew a surefire way to hook in her friend when she saw one as she smiled to herself smugly in success.

Cassie’s ears twitched in excitement before lilting her head in surprise towards Satsuki.  “You want to have tea with us? Don’t you normally switch off when I bring out the teacups? Or ask what my ‘deal’ is with my prominent proclivity for all things herbal?” Cassie pressed, a little unsure of her companion’s change in attitude towards her interest.

Unsure how to respond, Satsuki smiled broadly and bought precious seconds to think before responding to the curious

“Those seem like.. Words I used sure! But I’m just trying to think how you can involve your lil floating buddy there and not, well, mope up the place? I mean come on Cassie he’ll be back before you know it. He’s right there! It’s not like he’s gone far!” Satsuki fumbled.

It wasn’t that she didn’t miss her own Pomu. She case an eye to her left at her own lantern which bobbed wistfully between the twitching tips of her many tails where she kept it, but cheering up her friend took precedence and she pushed her usually pensive personality aside.

“Come on, let’s put on some of that tea of yours and relax. I’m sure your little buddy there would love for you to have fun.” Satsuki beamed, never thinking herself much of the performing type, yet here she was putting on a show for her melancholy friend.

Cassie thought for a moment on how best to involve her sleeping companion.  As much at this point to humour Satsuki who she felt was clearly trying hard, she puffed out her chest and spoke with her confident voice; “Well, if we’re going to have tea, my Pomu would retrieve my teacups and teapot, but I’m unsure where he’s put them at this time.

She paused and thought about whether they were still inside her shadow or whether her pomu had stashed them before entering the crystalline state.  “Quite the conundrum” she purred.

Satsuki thought for a second and figured if she was going to go along with this, she might as well make it fun.  She slyly took a look around to make sure there were no witnesses for what she was about to do.  It wasn’t something she wanted to explain to Misfit back in Ahza.

“Pomu! Pomu!” She chirped as she bounced around, pulling her most convincing pomu expression, standing on her hind legs andg erratically back into the cabin to look for teacups.

Cassie’s jaw dropped wide as she burst into laughter at her friend’s act. “Suki dear what in Eyre has got into you, you’re acting most peculiar today!” She chuckled, taking a few steps closer towards the cabin to get a better look.

“Pomu! Pomu!” Satsuki barked again as she rifled through the cupboards looking for any teacups that she thought Cassie might like.  Eventually she settled on some nice ones Spike must have left behind before he went wandering, decorated and inlaid with bluebells and buttercups before bringing them back out to the porch.

Cassie at this point was in hysterics and rolled onto her side in laughter, she had not seen her friend act far from the realms of calm and collected.  Such a drastic change drew her thoughts far from the malaise she had been feeling.  Her leg twitched as she laughed and stirred up loose orange leaves as they wafted around on the decking.

Satsuki narrowed her eyes and smirked to herself. “Mission accomplished” she giggled. “Hope she forgets about this though.  But I’d better actually pour the tea before she hurts herself.” Satsuki continued quietly.

Upon regaining her senses, Cassie wiped away the tears of laughter and began steeping tea leaves in fresh hot water which Satsuki brought from the house. Soon she had a beautiful bubbling brew with steam rising in wispy columns which flowed out from under the porch roof.

It was a beautiful midmorning by the time they had finished and the two kittoms stared at their lanterns which bobbed together on the porch against a chorus of birdsong and distant animal calls.

Cassie could have sworn that her pomu’s lantern grew slightly brighter in that instant.  It may have been a trick of the light or her imagination, but she felt a connection and kinship to her friend as though he were present.  Gently she placed a teacup by her lantern’s string and filled it carefully with her steaming brew.

“Missing you, little friend. Hope you’re sleeping restfully,” Cassie beamed, her eyes damp with emotion as a breath of wind chimed the tiny bells of her lantern in response.

Satsuki too was moved by the display, shuttering her eyes and grinning softly  as she curled her tails gently around her own lantern.  Sometimes it was just good to check in with feelings like that and appreciate the things you have.

As well as those which you will have in the future.
