Ren's relentless adventuring spirit made her unsettled during the miasma months. She wasn’t one to stay put and was always on the go. Unlike other young kittoms who found hobbies indoors crafting and cooking, Ren was well all over the place as she couldn’t sit still for more than an hour. Her friend Ami found her a little crazy as when she tried to teach her how to craft, there was more paint and clay all over the place. Instead her best friend recommended she found a hobby outdoors that spent her energy so that she would be more calm at night.
Ren went back to her old habits of fishing, swimming and gathering Manaberries, but all that felt too repetitive. She wanted more fun and adventure. One day she was sitting on the edge of the pier with her fishing line in the water. She observed the frogs swimming in the clear water and hopping from one lily pad to the next. Ren wondered how the lily pads were strong enough not to sink in the water as the frog jumped from one to the other.
The days went by and Ren was even more restless; she was ready to move on from Ealei, having climbed whatever cliff she could, swam to her heart's content and ate as many berries as possible. She wondered if the place had to offer more to her other than clear waters one could swim for hours on end, sunny skies, an abundance of Manaberries and fishing. As she climbed one of the rocky cliffs she looked down at one of the ponds and heard the usual croaking sound of frogs. It gave her an idea that she never thought of before. If frogs can do it, so can I right?
She climbed down the cliff and rushed back to town. Knocking on her friend's door, as she waited for her to open it. Ren was tapping her foot in anticipation, as to her it was taking her way too long to open the door. Patience was not her virtue. Her friend barely had time to open the door as she grabbed her by the paw and yielded her towards the closest pond.
Ami said “ Uh hi Ren how’s it going today and where are we going?”
Ren hadn’t even given her the chance to take off her apron as she still had clay and paint on her paws. Ami was struggling to keep up with her friend as she so ever enthusiastically held on to her paw and dragged her forward.
All Ren said to her was “You’ll see !”
When the two friends arrived at the pond, Ami looked around a tad bit confused as it looked like it always did.
“ So why are we at the pond Ren?”
Ren replied “ LOOK closely you’ll see it!”
Her friend still had no idea what she was going on about. Everything was like it always was.
At this point Ren was getting restless “ Don’t you see the frogs !”
Ami looked at the frogs on the lily pads and the ones enjoying the swim in the pond. “Yeah the frogs are doing their thing” she replied.
Before she knew it her friend had lost her patience and just jumped on to a lily pad. Ami had closed her eyes thinking her friend had jumped into it and then got trapped and into the leaf and fell into the water. But to her surprise she cracked open one eye. Her friend had a huge grin from ear to ear as she was laughing.
“See we can do it too!” Her friend exclaimed as she jumped to the next lily pad having a ball.
The two proceeded to have fun all afternoon under the sun as she jumped from one lily pad to the next. This became their new favorite activity that they could do for hours on end. When they became too tired they would float around the water and relax. When they would be done for the day they would sit on a rock or a pier and dry off their fur. Sometimes they weren’t so lucky and would miss the lily pad or sometimes it was too small to hold their weight. But they didn’t care if they got wet. All they cared about was the fun they had together. Ami was happy for Ren as she found a new activity and she didn’t mind enjoying it with her.
Ren was the happiest each day, that was all she needed during these long months, having fun with her best friend and enjoying the outdoors. She really had to stay in shape if she wanted to continue all her activities and didn’t want to be cooped up inside like her friend. I mean after all who could enjoy pottery? She had no patience for that and she didn’t like getting her fur messy. Maybe it was because Ami's mother disapproved of Ren's claying methods. Which usually meant more stuff everywhere then on the pottery wheel. Poor Ami had the patience of a God, trying to teach her but her mother did not. Ami wondered though perhaps if ever her friend would be able to sit down and enjoy pottery with her. But maybe that was too much wishful thinking, after all her friend had thought of “skip the lily pads”. But all that mattered was that the two friends were able to play together and enjoy each other's company.
