Luzia was still in the middle of the forest swamps of Enmir. Her teacher was talking in the background and the group of kittoms were all listening, the lunch break was almost over, and Luzia, who had already finished her sandwich, looked around. Enmir was buzzing with fireflies and the swamp nearby was harboring a vast variety of animals and plants. She could see the water moving, frogs leaping from lily pads and catching fireflies and dragonflies midair. She was fascinated and wanted to get closer, but then the teacher called them back. The adult, who had caught the snake earlier, had released the little friend and it slithered away into the bushes. Now the other adult had returned, this time with a plant.
“What a marvelous specimen this is! Gather around, everyone, this is another important lesson!”
The kittoms perked up and Luzia returned to her place, eagerly awaiting to learn about this native plant.
“The Nebulafern is a one-of-a-kind plant that grows in the hidden swamps of Enmir. It stands at about two feet tall and has a slender central stem that branches out into celestial-like fronds. These fronds are decorated with clusters of shimmering, star-shaped leaves that have an iridescent glow. The colors on each leaf gradually shift, transforming from dark blues and purples to light blues and greens and creating the illusion of a constantly moving nebula. If you come a little closer, you can still see this effect! We made sure to carefully remove the plant with its root, so after this lesson, we can put the plant back into the soil, with no harm done. Remember, children, always be respectful towards nature."
The kittoms nodded all in unison, while being mesmerized by the plant before them.
“As night falls, the Nebulafern transforms into a living light show. Luminous patterns emerge along its fronds, resembling constellations and fireflies that glow softly in the darkness. These patterns are not only beautiful but serve as a form of communication among the ferns. It was discovered that these plants build a network all across the swamp.
The Nebulafern is different from regular plants because it doesn't only rely on photosynthesis. It has developed a special way to get its food. On the sides of its star-shaped leaves, there are tiny hair-like structures that capture and absorb energy from the air. These plants grow very well near mana wells and shrines, and they are found in large numbers in those places. The plant's roots also extend deep into the swampy soil, extracting essential nutrients and moisture to support its unique feeding mechanism.
Deep within the Nebulafern also lies a softly shimmering core. This central glow serves as a beacon, attracting nocturnal pollinators to the plant. And during the breeding season, Nebulaferns release spores that carry a faint bioluminescence and are often mistaken for fireflies. These spores are eventually carried by the wind and water, spreading the plant's genetic material to new areas of the swamp and jungle.”
