Regional Scenery Prompt December 2023 - Strynhalde
Life in Strynhalde could be tough at the best of times. The cold, unforgiving landscape had something of a reputation among nin for it’s hostility. Few would choose to live and work in such a place, especially during winter when the cold and miasma chose to join hands and tighten their grip, but Fu had a job to do.
She had agreed to guide Loki during his studies and if she was late he would surely make a fuss. In her calm and measured fashion, she rubbed her tired blue eyes with her paw and pushed open the old wooden door. She took one final look ather cabin, fluffed her fur for warmth and felt the snow give way to her steps with a resounding crunch as she began her commute.
The white forest stretched out before her and on into the distance, with it’s frozen boughs reaching out in great, twisted curls. While the forests of Bellmoril were known for their white trees, the trees of the white forest took on an almost otherworldly luminescence. Sheets of ice crept down the bark like diminutive glaciers. From the branches sprouted forth rime touched leaves, feathered with icy crystal which glimmered in the touches of what little morning sun penetrated the crowded canopy.
Strynhalde’s fierce winds from above swayed the trees in great waves, waking a gentle singing voice of the trees with an otherworldly chorus of creaking wood and cracking ice as they bent and swayed with a soft rhythm. The air beneath however was comparatively still, with only a gentle breath of air which breathed softly through the path. The great white trees in all their magnificent size would shelter the denizens of the forest below as they competed vigorously for what little light was present in these climes; creating an eerie void in which one may find stillness in an otherwise inhospitable land.
Each quiet pawstep pressed through layers of uneven snow which fell in lumps from above, pressing through soft upper layers of fresh falls before being the perfmafrost below gave sure footing. The unrelenting snowfalls of Strynhalde piled high upon the upper canopy of the forest and coalesced into great drifts held aloft. Periodically the trees would groan under the weight of these masses and the snow would suddenly come crashing to the ground. One would always do well to steer clear of the sound of groaning wood from above in these lands.
As Fu glanced around, she would peer deep into the forest as she took in the terrain. Her wandering glance was answered by the calls of deer and the song of the few birds resilient enough to stay warm in the frigid cold. The occasional shape would pass behind the trees with long legged grace and the sounds of hooves would crunch against the snow; followed closely by the twinkle of nervous eyes retreating deeper into the snowy forest.
To know the forest was to know the way forward, but Fu had other business and she pressed on. As she approached the town, the smells of decaying bracken from the season’s turning gave way to the scent of fresh baked bread which wafted on a smooth breeze snaking through the undergrowth.
The morning chatter of nin from the town met the sounds of birdsong which brought a sense of homeliness to the otherwise desolate white forest of Strynhalde. That nin would find the resilience to make their home here on it’s fringes brought a certain charm to the region which nature had not planned for. Truly it gave the area it’s own brightness, though in her reclusive nature Fu would never speak out loud as such. She would also not deign to admit out loud the sense of purpose helping her new friend had given her as she rapped against the studious Loki’s door.
