Liesl, ever restless and prone to being seized by wanderlust, had already ducked under many a bright festival canopy and tumbled through countless forest shrouds during her short life on Eyre. Yet time and again her thoughts were drawn toward Enmir, and it was of dim swamps and firefly swarms that she daydreamed while cooped up in a particularly banal sigaldry class in Il’durahn.

Enmir, despite the rather sinister murmurs surrounding the far reaches of its wetlands, had been unrivaled in furthering her medicinal education. Despite her siblings’ protests, she had had the time of her life floating about on makeshift rafts of rotted driftwood, letting the current carry her toward the thrills of the unknown. And the gloomier the shade of its gnarled and ancient trees, the brighter her scarlet coat shone by comparison. Once the miasma season passed and her studies in Bellmoril concluded, she was aching to return to the Cindermarsh’s herb-thick shores.

No longer paying the slightest whit of attention to her class lecture, Liesl imagined what sorts of presents she might wheedle out of her siblings until she could return to the region herself. Perhaps a field guide of the plants that bristled along the banks of the Shaedmoor, curiously seeming to need no light at all. Or even a travelling lantern of delicately blown glass, brimming with enchanted light or perhaps just with indignant fireflies. With that last thought, she drifted off into a nap, content with dreams of adventure and uncaring that she was soon to draw her professor’s ire.
