Deep within the swamplands of Enmir, a striking species of rare heron known as the Luminescent Crestwing can sometimes be spotted within the waterlogged expanses of this land. Its name calls back to its impressive wingspan, which the heron displays often while exploring its habitat, the plumage a testament to the unique traits developed by creatures in this environment.
The male crestwing’s feathers along its body vary from black to grey to the occasional navy or deep blue, but unlike the muted tones found in its most common cousins, their crests and wings are a mesmerizing blend of opalescent hues. The primary feathers in its wings shimmer with an oil-slick shine of greens, purples, and blues. Each of these primary feathers is outlined with a delicate tracery of silver, which catches the green-hued light of the swamps to create an otherworldly glow should the heron stand just at the right angle. The bird’s amber eyes are framed by ebony feathers that stretch along the top of its head and dip low into its back and wings, helping the colorful bird blend into its environment when its wings are carefully tucked into its side.
When stumbling upon this heron, the most common sight is that of the heron gracefully wading through the shallow waters of the swamp. In these sightings, the crestwing employs its elongated neck with calculated precision. With its slender and pointed beak, it dispatches aquatic prey with a quick dart of its head into the murky waters. Small fish, frogs, and the occasional insect make up the majority of its diet.
During mating season, the Luminescent Crestwing transforms its marshy domain into an enchanting realm of opalescent sheen. The males engage in elaborate courtship displays, with luminescent crests, similar to their much-admired wings, flaring and their wings stretching under direct light, to cast a dazzle of colors into their watery surroundings. The females, distinguished by their smaller crests and few luminescent feathers, select mates based on the brilliance of the male’s plumage.
While rare, these enchanting herons with their extraordinary coloration and enchanting presence, have played a notable role in sparking an adventurer’s instinct in kittoms and elnin alike. Some even hint at an origin that appears mysterious, as rumor has it that those who spot the cranes will only do so once, as the animals will flee the area to wander into unknown waters should they be spotted, never to be seen again.
