A hoard of little kittoms chased after Myth as she raced along the edges of the Starlake. Her paws left prints in the soft sands, but they were soon trampled over by the bustling group that followed close behind her. After a while of running, she breathed a sigh of relief as she saw a small hill overlooking the lake come into view. With one final effort, she sprinted ahead and claimed her spot atop the hill.

“M-made it…” She gasped, trying to catch her breath.

The other kittoms all stopped once they reached her. There were five in total: Skyburner, Frey, Shiloh, Sun, and Zireael. They had all followed her after she had told them that she knew of the perfect place to watch the stars fall for the annual faire.

“Is this the spot?” Sun said.

“Sure is! Pretty neat, am I right? Told you guys.” The kittoms gazed at the starlit lake. Myth stared in awe as she watched the lake’s surface reflect the sky’s twinkling stars. This was the best place to view the shooting stars that fell each year during the festival – she was sure of it. Not only was Silveil’s eternally dark sky lit up with stars, it was also reflected beautifully on the waters of the region’s biggest lake. Any falling stars they saw would appear on the water’s surface. The bioluminescent life in the lake would only help to set up the fantastic scene. It was mesmerizing!

“Wow!” Zireael said.

“Amazing!” Shiloh agreed.

Myth grinned ear to ear as she saw her friends’ excitement over the spectacular view. She had discovered this place only a few days prior when she was out playing on the lake’s edge.

“Yeah, it does look pretty nice.”

Myth’s head whipped around to see a calm and collected Frey staring out into the distance. “Y-you think so?” Her face grew hot.

“Ooh!” Sun teased. “Somone likes Frey!”

“W-what! No! Boys are gross! Why would I like Frey? That’s dumb!” Myth stammered, trying to hide her blushing face.

“You totally like him!”

“Nu-uh! I said that’s dumb!” Myth argued, desperately trying to disprove Sun’s claims.

“So what if Myth likes Frey? I think it’s cute to see elnins that are in love!” Skyburner sighed lovingly and played with her fur. “Lots of elnin have people they love. My mom said that when two elnin love each other very much-”

Ooookay, we’ll put a pause on that.” Zireael said, putting a paw up to Skyburner’s mouth to shush her. “Besides, Myth, didn’t you bring some of the Starfall Faire candy you got so we could have some snacks to eat while we watch for shooting stars?”

“But I wanted to hear what Skyburner was talki-” Shiloh peeped.

“Of course!” Myth shouted, glad that the subject had changed, and she pulled out a big pouch of candies from her satchel. They were wrapped in a clear baggie that she had purchased from a stall in the city, and they smelled sickeningly sweet. They were colorful, and they were - fittingly – shaped like little stars. “Pass them around. Everyone can have some, but don’t be greedy!”

The little bag was passed from kittom to kittom, and each one scooped up a pawful of the little sugar stars. Myth shyly watched as Frey, unbothered by the accusations earlier, eagerly took some of the candy. By the time the bag came back around, only a few candies remained, and Myth started snacking on what remained.

The group of kittoms chatted and munched on the candy. It seems her choice of festival snack was a hit! Not long after all of them finished off the bag, they spotted the first falling stars. The kittoms roared in excitement as the stars twinkled and raced across the sky. Their reflection on the Starlake was even better than the first time Myth had seen the event, and she was glad that she had brought her friends to see it.

As the night went on, the amount of falling stars slowly subsided until they sky was quiet once more. But most of the kittoms had passed out long before that. The sugary candy stars had all left them hyper, and as the sugar rush started to wear off, they each fell asleep one-by-one. It was way past their bedtimes, but their guardians had all relented when they asked to stay up late to watch the stars fall. Myth knew she should probably wake up her friends, but Frey was the only other kittom up, and she admittedly wanted to spend more time alone with him. The teasing that happened earlier had embarrassed her though, so she kept staring out into the starlit lake by herself.

A moment later, Frey stood up and walked over to her place on the hill, and he sat down beside her. Myth’s heart skipped a beat.

“Hi.” Frey smiled.

“H-hi.” Myth said.

The two of them sat in an awkward silence. At least, it was awkward for Myth. Frey, on the other hand, sat smiling nonchalantly as he snacked on a few of the sugar stars he had saved. He was completely unbothered. It seemed like they sat there for an eternity.

Frey was the first one to break the silence. “Pretty neat place to see the shooting stars. These candies were delicious, too. You’ll have to show me which stall in the Faire had them.”

“O-of course.” Myth blushed. “I- I could show you sometime?”

“Yeah, I’d like that.” He said, popping another candy into his mouth. “Tomorrow sound good?”

“Yeah!”

“Great! I’ll meet you at your house tomorrow at noon!” And with that, Frey picked himself up, and he started to round up the other napping kittoms. They groaned and bickered when he nudged them awake.

Myth, though, sat and stared in disbelief. Wh-what did I just agree to?! She thought to herself. Frey wants me to hang out? With him?!

The whole walk home, Myth’s stomach fluttered. She thought she was going to be sick. Was this for real?! She cautiously turned to look at Frey, who casually walked alongside the rest of her friends as they made their way home. He spotted her, and he gave her a gentle smile. Myth’s face turned red, and she quickly broke her gaze. Frey never really was one to joke or poke fun of others. He was always sweet, and he was nothing but kind to her. Maybe…maybe he liked her back?

“You got this, Myth.” She whispered to herself. “Yeah, just be yourself.” She trotted back home with a spring in her step. This was by far the best Starfall Faire.
