WORDS: 908
REGION: FAERINDELL

Content

Dax was home in Faerindell, a place he often tried to avoid. It wasn't that he didn't like the region, in fact, he was quite fond of it. His eyes looked around at the clear blue skies and the green rolling hills in the distance. Rich brown trees full of colourful shades of pink and white flowers spread across the town and into the distance. Pops of vibrant colours sprung up from any free grassland where the cobblestones of the quaint town allowed, and seemed to be planted in all the window boxes as well. There were classic faerie shrouds hanging down from some of the rooftops, growing like a weed from the surface and painting colour over the grey buildings.

It was beautiful. It felt like home to him, a place he longed to be... but his family was another thing entirely. He knew there was a good chance he'd see his mother, an elnin who was one gumball away from flying off into space from a sugar high. It seemed to be a trait she'd inherited from her mother, his grandmother, Pastel. He grew cautious as he slinked around the town he was born in, trying to recall the best places to hide in. It didn't seem he was quite as good at hiding as he thought he was thought because the voice rung through the air and he quickly realized his mistake as the horror descended upon him.

"Dacquoise!" It was his mother, Petit Four, and she'd spotted him.

Oh, candycanes. He hung his head for a minute before giving into defeat and looking up to greet her.

"Mother... I'm home."

As his mother approached, flying down to his level, he noticed that her arms were full of candy. Well, some things never changed.

"I've got a surprise for you!" She said with excitement, jittering around as if she'd consumed at least one arm full of candy already... which she probably had.

"Mother, please, I don't want candy."

Her face said it all. She was horrified. "What?"

"I don't want candy. That's the surprise, right?" Not even a good one, he could see the candy in her arms.

"This is mine." She said flatly, popping some more into her mouth.

Dax didn't know what to say to this, confusion spread across his face as his mother confused eating some of the candy.

She chewed for what seemed to be forever, his eyes glazing over as he stared into the vibrant faerie shrouds behind her.

"... and that's why you should head over to your grandparent's place."

And Petit Four had flown away before he even had a chance to explain he hadn't been listening. Oh, gumdrops.

Some time passed as he walked over to Sugar Tail Café, but he enjoyed the walk. This area of town was full of gardens and trees for all the faerie shrouds to climb up and cover, a plant Dax really quite enjoyed. As he reached the café and entered, he was greeted with the sweet smell of baked treats and complimentary drinks.

"Dax! You've made it!"

A familiar voice rung through his ears, a voice that was entirely a surprise to him. It shouldn't have been, considering that he also called Faerindell home.

"Pax?!" He gasped. "Pax! What are you doing here?"

The grumpy face that he had previously worn on his face was completely replaced with a huge smile! "You're the surprise?!"

In the background was his grandparents, Cookie and Pastel, hugging with big smiles on their faces as they watched on silently.

It definitely wasn't his mother that had arranged this as his eyes darted to his grandparents acting nonchalant as they pretended to be working, not listening intently. His eyes dawned back on Pax, the white and prismatic kittom with small little wings similar as he had. Tied to Pax's tail was a little rope with a sweet flower lantern that contained his pomu, a companion that Dax had yet to awaken from its deep slumber inside his shadow.

"Now that you've arrived, we can play!" Pax said with excitement, gesturing to a seat by the window that had been set up with colourful pillows and blankets to make it extra cozy. There was a board game on the table along with a plate of cookies and a drink for either of them set up.

Pax ushered Dax over to the table, pulling out the chair with a big grin on his face. Dax was blushing, and he was so thankful that it would be hard to see on his dark coat with dawn coloured fur mixed in.

Dax sat down, looking out the window and admiring the rolling hills in the distance. He could see the elder tree from here, a tall cherry tree with endless pink leaves covering it. His grandparents definitely picked a lovely place.

As Pax sat down, he began explaining the game to him. Dax listened intently, taking in Pax's soft spoken words with care. It was no surprise that Pax absolutely creamed him each time but losing didn't upset him. He saw Pax's excitement each time as he won and that made it feel like he won as well. How could he be mad that he lost when he had such a great prize himself? This was the best trip home yet! He was so engrossed in the hours they spent playing that he didn't even notice his grandparents watching.
