Each step through the northern downpour sent a chill of discomfort through his being. The humid air, along with the two girls in tow, had exhausted him and for a moment he considered flinging his body off of the very mountain they were all on. The thick brush beneath them snagged and gripped at their legs, each wiggling around until they regained their footing. Citron’s chartreuse eyes narrow, keen hearing picking up the slightest grumble of a stomach or two. Unfortunately, one of which was his own...
“Hey, can’t we catch a quick breather? I swear, I’m going to eat myself from the inside out if we keep going like this!”
For once, he dramatically falls down, a paw resting on top of his forehead, eyes closed and tongue sticking out to resemble the way actors died in the theater. Eos looks at him, the corners of her eyes crinkling in mirth. His cousin, however, was in no way amused. Haru knocks her hip into Eos, a wordless signal to hurry on her way and not to dawdle around with her much more annoying kin. The mostly white kit gives Citron a sheepish smile, tailing after the newly proclaimed leader of their small rag-tag group. On certain days, it seemed like they all got a long better, too. It was something Eos treasured...
“Hey, hold on!”
The oranged-colored kit harped, scuttling to his feet and dashing off after the two. An equally annoyed glare was exchanged between the two family, while the friend fall back to awkwardly watch things play out, her ears pinned backward and looking around their surroundings to avoid the unnecessary awkward tension.
“I swear Citron, it’s like you forgot why we even came up here in the first place. And before you say anything - no, it wasn’t to kick you off of a cliff at the last minute.”
The golden kittom’s ears perk up. Did she hear that right, was that truthfully their reason to come up here? Her thoughts abruptly end, Haru’s voice cutting through the short silence like a hot knife through butter.
“We’re here because of all that talk in the town, about how the roasted cirrog legs were simply unmatched here in Kyendi, and since we’re here we might as well taste it!”
Brows furrow together, he recalls when the locals were chirping about their wonderful delicacies in this region, and how proud they were to be from Kyendi. The thought isn’t dwelled on much, since his focus was primarily on the food they’d have to catch.
“Anyways, I was reading up on them, and they’re unlike any other creature I’ve ever encountered before! Unlike being under water, they float! As if the sky was their ocean!!! Can you believe that? Or - or that when they croak, it sounds like thunder striking the soil! They come in a multitude of colors, but the best tasting one is the orange ones with yellow rumps!”
Gosh, she could just go on and on forever, huh ? He’s not impressed in the slightest, tuning out her bothersome chatter and facts. Hopefully when she notices that he’s turned his brain off, she’ll get the hint and stop. Luck isn’t on his side, though, as Eos catches up and walks side-by-side with Haru, giving occasional exclamations and asking questions to show that she was engaged. Meaning Haru was never going to shut up now.
“You both never cease to annoy me. I’m going up on ahead, don’t follow me unless it’s to show what you’ve caught.”
Yellow eyes soften in sadness, watching as the boy’s figure shrinks into the distance. Haru calls out to her, shaking her head.
“He’s so dumb. Cirrogs can only be found in certain locations. The higher you go up, the thinner the air, which means most of them stay down here so they can actually swim around in the air. You can only catch them by scaring them, too, so they let out any of the air and drop!”
“You know a lot about this, Haru! It’s really impressive!”
That compliment, it makes the peachy kittom imperceptibly blush, turning her head and body so that the other girl couldn’t see the faint smile on her features.
Together they walk in sync, paws lightly raising and falling to connect with the loamy soil beneath them. That was one of the best parts about Kyendi, how wildly magical everything felt. The sound of thunder clapping made the pair jump, with Haru clinging onto Eos. A brief clear of her throat, she awkwardly peels herself from the hold of the other girl and lowers her head.
“Shh, one’s near... Remember, keep your eyes on the sky and tell me if you see any, and remember to scare ‘em!”
Haru stalks the ground, eyes scanning tot canopy of vines above them, granting sanctuary for a few of those creatures. Blessed with incredible vision, she can see them float along the air, almost as if they were coasting along on the breeze itself. There were three, but the one she had her eyes on was exactly the way she described prior- orange scaled with whisps of mist curling around their necks, and tadpole tails with the cloudy texture circling the base. Plus, a yellow rump! This one was hers, it’s gotta be hers! Haru’s prepared to strike when the opportunity presents itself to her, floating near her general direction. Just as she’s about to kick off of the ground and snag this one, the dew on the rock below caused her to lose her footing and slip. Her eyes well with tears, staring up at this delectable creature. Her one opportunity, and now it was going to get away!
If the Gods up there took pity on her, thank you. Eos crawled up along the vines and practically roared with all her little heart for that frog to jump and lose all of its air, sinking below to Haru like a fallen piece of paper. Quickly does she capture it in her paws, refusing to budge at all. Eos was her hero. The girl clambers up, wrapping the savior in a hug, excitedly bounding around.
“You’re such a lifesaver, Eos, thanks! Now that we got one, I just wanna find Orange-Head and cook this little guy before my stomach fights me back, too!”
